New Board Policy, JICJ - Personal Technology Devices (PTDs)
As we prepare for the 2026-27 school year, there is a new Board Policy, JICJ, regarding student use of Personal Technology Devices (PTD), including privately owned portable technology devices. The passing of JICJ ensures we are in compliance with the legislation. Examples of PTDs are:
-
cell phones, pagers, tablets, laptops, cameras, smartwatches, earbuds/headphones, gaming devices, smart glasses (e.g., Ray-Ban Meta), audio and/or video recorders and players, and all other wearable and hand-held electronic communication and data storage devices.
Below is a quick-reference guide with the expectations for all grade levels. Please note that PTDs should not be visible or audible during instruction time.
Grades PK-8:
-
PTDs are silenced and stored in a designated location or storage device during class; PTDs cannot be located on a student’s person for the entire school day.
Grades 9-12:
-
PTDs are silenced and stored in a designated location or storage device during class; PTDs cannot be located on a student’s person.
-
Use is allowed at lunch or passing periods, per the principal’s discretion - please check your school’s expectations.
Creating a positive learning environment and ensuring our classrooms are free from unnecessary digital distractions has been shown to be beneficial for academic success and improved student mental health. As staff members, when you hold firm on expectations for students in your classroom, it creates consistency across your entire school and the District. Working together to support students with the new expectations will be key to a positive implementation.
