Social Emotional Learning

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

At Bishop Elementary, social-emotional learning is an integral part of our day to day learning. All students receive direct instruction through Second Step, an SEL curriculum that helps children gain confidence, collaborate with others, make good decisions, and more! To further support students in their journey through social-emotional learning, we have a school psychologist/counselor, Kim Fickas, and a school social worker, Hope Sweringen, to help support students with their various needs. Both Mrs. Fickas and Ms. Hope are available to check-in with students, provide resources to families, and help children meet their social-emotional goals. If you have any needs, do not hesitate to contact either one of them!
